Stephen Chan

Stephen Chan is a historian, educator, and martial artist specializing in African and Latin American history, with additional expertise in mythology, folklore, and cross-cultural education. He earned his M.A. in African History in 1997, focusing on Southern African history, historical memory, and Afro-Caribbean religious expression, and his B.A. in History from Pomona College in 1991, concentrating on African and Modern Asian history.

His international research has taken him to South Africa, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe, and he has pursued language studies in French, Zulu, and Shona. A passionate teacher and mentor, he has served as an educator, consultant, and program organizer for institutions including the University of California, Michigan State University, and Harvard-Westlake School.

In addition to his academic career, he is a dedicated martial artist and holds a 3rd Dan black belt in Hapkido, reflecting his lifelong commitment to discipline, balance, and personal development.

He has received numerous awards for teaching excellence and professional leadership, including the Laguna Blanca School Yearbook Dedication (2017) and the Harvard-Westlake Senior Tribute Award (2008). Through his scholarship, teaching, and martial arts practice, he continues to inspire cross-cultural understanding and holistic growth.
